About Me

My photo
On May 4, 2009, Josh and I discovered that our soon to be little girl, due on August 25th, would be born with a CHD known as HLHS (hypo-plastic left heart syndrome). Upon hearing "something is wrong with your baby's heart" our lives changed completely. Our little Ruth Elizabeth was brought into this world on August 18, 2009. She was delivered via c-section and rushed immediately from Barnes to Childrens' Hospital for a cardiac cath intervention. Her arial septum was reopened and a week later, Ruthie underwent her first open heart surgery, the Norwood. Unfortunately, Ruthie was not able to survive on her Norwood heart and the Glenn procedure would not work for her. Ruthie was placed on the heart transplant list Feb.3, 2010. After waiting in SLCH, Ruthie received a new heart on July 5, 2010. We are so humbly blessed to receive this gift of life. We now are on the road to recovery. We have had our ups and downs. We have become SLCH regulars due to countless hospital stays and ER visits. We are learning how to manage life outside of SLCH and with another little girl. Now that we have two children, we are learning the about being a heart FAMILY.

Getting pretty comfy

Posted Sep 11, 2009 10:23pm

Ruthie is home now and doing great. We are working on taking the bottle by mouth. She takes about 1 oz (sometimes more) by mouth and then the rest (1.5 oz) by feeding tube every 4 hours. She is doing really well. We hope to have her off the feeding tube as soon as she is ready to take it all by bottle. Everything seems to be going good right now. She is adjusting to a more quiet living environment. No more nurses and doctors waking her every couple hours to unwrap her and check things out. No more alarms and other children crying. No more of mommy sleeping on a bench. We are really liking being home. It feels much more comfortable.
Ruthie had her first pediatric appointment today. She weighs 6lbs and 3oz (up 6 oz since birth) and is 20 inches long (up 2 inches from birth). Her development looks good and besides her special heart, she is healthy and normal. What a nice appointment. So relaxed.
We go back for a check up with the cardiologist on a Sept. 17th. So until then, we are just working on eating and getting use to the home life and my puppy Zoey. Zoey is still a bit confused with the crying noise and the whole baby thing, but in time we know they will be best friends.
Thank you so much for all the support and prayers. We know our journey is no where near over, but step one has been completed.
Thank Heaven for Little Girls.
Thank God for miracles.
and Thank you for all your advice and support. It means more then you will ever know.
We love you!
BIG BIG Heart hugs!
Ruthie, Laura, and Josh
