About Me

My photo
On May 4, 2009, Josh and I discovered that our soon to be little girl, due on August 25th, would be born with a CHD known as HLHS (hypo-plastic left heart syndrome). Upon hearing "something is wrong with your baby's heart" our lives changed completely. Our little Ruth Elizabeth was brought into this world on August 18, 2009. She was delivered via c-section and rushed immediately from Barnes to Childrens' Hospital for a cardiac cath intervention. Her arial septum was reopened and a week later, Ruthie underwent her first open heart surgery, the Norwood. Unfortunately, Ruthie was not able to survive on her Norwood heart and the Glenn procedure would not work for her. Ruthie was placed on the heart transplant list Feb.3, 2010. After waiting in SLCH, Ruthie received a new heart on July 5, 2010. We are so humbly blessed to receive this gift of life. We now are on the road to recovery. We have had our ups and downs. We have become SLCH regulars due to countless hospital stays and ER visits. We are learning how to manage life outside of SLCH and with another little girl. Now that we have two children, we are learning the about being a heart FAMILY.

Weekend Smiles

Ah, I love weekends full of smiles and giggles. Ruthie has been rather happy the past couple days.
On Friday, Ruth had a surprise visit from a St. Louis favorite, Chris Carpenter. (For those of you who don't know Chris Carpenter; he is a St. Louis Cardinals' pitcher. He is actually a quite talented pitcher.) Anyways, he was in the hospital and the nurses saw him down the hall. So quickly they flew into action and got Ruthie all dressed up in her Cards gear. She was all dressed up and smiles by the time he hit her room. The St. Louis Post Dispatch took a few pictures and Carpenter gave her a bear with a signed Cardinals jersey.

Besides her meeting famous baseball players, Ruthie's weekend has been good. She is working hard on sitting up and playing with her new birthday toys. She is smiling non- stop and almost laughing out loud.

Unfortunately, her chest x-rays are not showing the same "happiness". They are still a bit cloudy and her right lower lobe is still collapsed. She "clinically" looks good, but her films don't say the same thing.
RT and the nurses have bumped up their attack plan. They are still "vesting" her every 4 hours and giving her breathing treatments. They are now adding chest PD (where they beat on her right side) every four hours (between her "vest" treatment). We are all working on getting her sitting up and moving around. We are encouraging her coughing and suctioning her to keep her clear. With every suction and every cough, I hope we are getting closer to the end of this infection and lung junk.
Ruthie is up to full feeds. She is tolerating them well. She is on pediasure 28 mils an hour continuously.

Please continue to pray for Ruth's strength. Pray that she can continue to heal her diaphragm and clear her lungs out. Pray for the doctors and nurses. Pray for their guidance and wisdom. Pray for courage and pray for understanding. Pray for patience.

Thank you so much for the comments and prayers. We are very blessed.

Hugs!

  1. Love those smiles! We worked FOREVER to get my son Sam to smile after his surgery. It took a super pretty, young nurse to walk in and win his smile! We're praying for you all!

  2. I saw a pic of her with Carpenter on FB that SLCH had posted on their page. It was adorable! She looks so sweet! I am praying for her and you and Josh. I also sent an email out to family and friends asking for prayer and asked for prayer at church today as well. I will for sure stop by on Thursday when we are there for Maggie's cath. See you soon!
