About Me

My photo
On May 4, 2009, Josh and I discovered that our soon to be little girl, due on August 25th, would be born with a CHD known as HLHS (hypo-plastic left heart syndrome). Upon hearing "something is wrong with your baby's heart" our lives changed completely. Our little Ruth Elizabeth was brought into this world on August 18, 2009. She was delivered via c-section and rushed immediately from Barnes to Childrens' Hospital for a cardiac cath intervention. Her arial septum was reopened and a week later, Ruthie underwent her first open heart surgery, the Norwood. Unfortunately, Ruthie was not able to survive on her Norwood heart and the Glenn procedure would not work for her. Ruthie was placed on the heart transplant list Feb.3, 2010. After waiting in SLCH, Ruthie received a new heart on July 5, 2010. We are so humbly blessed to receive this gift of life. We now are on the road to recovery. We have had our ups and downs. We have become SLCH regulars due to countless hospital stays and ER visits. We are learning how to manage life outside of SLCH and with another little girl. Now that we have two children, we are learning the about being a heart FAMILY.

Lately

Seconds turn into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into weeks. I am just excited that weeks have not turned into months since my last update!
BUT. since the last post we have had some events!

Ruth had a button (g tube) placed and her NG tube removed.

Pre-surgery!

Post- Surgery

Cuddling with Daddy the day after surgery!

Ruthie also celebrated her second Halloween.

Ruthie dressed up like a Rooster (Ruester).

Since Ruthie was a Rooster, Josh and I dressed as farmers.

We had such a fun time that Ruthie passed out with her Rooster hair.
The morning after Halloween, she was still rockin' the "Rooster".

So lately, we are working on feeds.
We are increasing her volume each feed in order to eliminate the overnight feedings.
We are also starting in- home therapies this week.
We have PT and OT coming for an hour once a week.
We will be working on sitting independently, eating by mouth and crawling.
We need Ruth to gain some core strength so that crawling, walking and sitting are easier tasks.

I am so excited to start working with therapies again. We have not had formal therapies since our Children's stay. It will be good for both Ruthie and I to learn all there is to learn about her development. Oh let the fun begin!

Thanks for the support and prayers.

  1. You are doing a good job. She is so chubby and cute. She is getting big you are the strongest mother I know. I know that the waiting for a new heart was the hardest and the scariest time for you. But you pulled yourself and your husband and also little Ruthie through it all.Keep up the good work.
